Hi Eva,

Thank you for the lovely compliment on my cake. I wish I could take credit for the idea but that is what my daughter asked for; "a unicorn with a penguin on it's back". wWho knows where children come up with these things, I think she just likes to challenge me. Hi Eva,

Thank you for the lovely compliment on my cake. I wish I could take credit for the idea but that is what my daughter asked for; "a unicorn with a penguin on it's back". wWho knows where children come up with these things, I think she just likes to challenge me. As for your question, yes I did use a "skewer" to attach the head. I actually sculpted it on a food safe wooden dowel rod and allowed it to firm slightly, I then covered it with a very thin coating of gumpaste; mostly to fill in all the cracks and crevasses. I just ripped off small peices of gumpaste and, kinda like clay, just stretched and pressed it to the surface and allowed it to harden so that when I iced it in the BC it would appear smoother. Once the lamb pan was done baking and cooling I removed it's head and placed the "body" on a half sheet cake that I had iced previously. I then determined the heighth that I would need it by holding the "head on a stick" up to the body and sheet cake; using garden snips, that I only use for the purpose of cutting dowels for cakes, I cut it a little long and used a pencil sharpener, again strictly reserved for cake baking, to make the end pointy, this allowed my to not only attach the head to the body but to skewer the entire unicorn to the bottom cake and cake board for stability. I used another dowel rod about half way down the unicorns body, again, to attach the unicorn to the cake; I iced and decorated it once it was attached to the sheet cake. Also, no, I did not make my own fondant. I used the Wilton premade fondant and colored it the colors that I needed. If I had been making it for anybody other then family I most likely would have made my own, as I do not like the way fondant tastes. When I do make my own I use a recipe for marshmellow fondant (you can find it on cakecentral.com), it tasts like marshmellow fluff but chewier.

Please keep in mind that there are 2 different 3d lamb pans out there. One that is cute and cuddlely with it's head laying mostly on it's back. The other, which is the one I used, is a more realistic lamb with it's head looking straight ahead and it's ears are HUGE. ( I think the head is actually unproportionate to the body). I think I have posted a picture of the one I used; I am not technically inclined...yes it is attached, however, it is located at the bottom of this entire discussion where the conversation began with Shallena. I bought it off ebay as I was not able to find it any where else, but you may be able to find it at a cake supply store or something. I hope this information is helpful. Please let me know if there is anything else I can answer for you. Good luck.

Cheers,
If you like it and I can give you any pointers, please let me know and I will be happy to help you in any way I can. Just FYI...I baked it in the lamb pan with a pound cake, cut off it's little head (wasn't as messy as it sounds), and replaced it with a horse head I "sculpted" out of Rice Crispy Treats. I do use the word sculpted lightly, I basically squished and pressed until it resembled a horse (had to google image so I would know what one looked like). Thank you Lois. It was a challenge to come up with it. When your 6 (soon to be 7) year old says she wants a unicorn cake with a penguin on it's back, it sets you back abit. Last year she wanted a monkey cake, we compromised and since then I have made the requested character in the number of the age she is turning. Thus 7 penguins, last year it was 6 monkeys, next year who knows. I will post the pictures of last years cake (I hope no one minds) so you can see what I am talking about.
