Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I am trying to create a twisted rope for spiraling around a cake, the problem i am having is that when trying to roll it out thin enough (i dont want it too thick mabe 3mm total) it starts to flake apart, would i be better off using flowerpaste for this instead of any of the other options and do you have any tips on rolling it really long and thin? was thinking of using a playdoh press lol.

Hi Peter - I've done this  few times - what medium are you using? Is it fondant? Modeling chocolate? Gumpaste? Good fondant shouldn't flake apart.  You should be able to get it pretty thin.  I wouldn't use a playdoh press because you can only do a little at a time and then reload the press so you'll end up with a lot of weak spots.  What I do is start with a log and then just progressively roll it out to the sides. It does take some practice.  Good luck!

I use my Makens Clay Extruder to make long ropes that are all the same size.  It is a great tool and they are always the same size...

and you can make hair for figures with it and it makes a lot of different shapes.  worth the investment for sure!

I also have a mold that makes rope... soooo handy to have.  I got it at Cakes by Sam but I can not get their website to work for me to link it for you.
