Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

to stack, or not to stack, that is the question! :)

I would love everyone to weigh in on transporting your cakes and why you do it the way you do.

I know alot of you transport your cakes fully assembled and stacked with a dowel down the middle, while others prefer to transport single tiers and stack and assemble at the venue.

I will be doing a 4 tier wedding cake in July, sizes will be 6, 10, 14, 18. The 6 and 14" tiers will have satin ribbon around them and the other 2 tiers will have fresh lemon and lime half moons around them. The event will be approximately 45 minutes from my house. How would you transport and why? thanks everyone! I love to hear people's oppinions!

The most important thing is to transport it in a way that will not overstress you. If you don't feel comfortable stacking and driving then don't do it. It just isn't worth it to save a little time at the venue.

Having said that, I would stack them 2 and 2 for transport and then complete the assembly at the venue. It if was 3 tiers I'd be tempted to transport fully assembled.
I keep having to deliver to far off places and I am terrorfied to take them stacked. With all the construction here and crazy drivers, it would be my luck something would happend and the cake would be damaged beyond repair. If they are sitting flat on a non skid mat you have a better chance of them arriving safely and no damage. You would need a few extra minutes to assemble but at least you have the peace of mind knowing the cake is just as perfect as it was when you left your location.
I usually take my cakes unstacked and allow myself a couple hours to set up after I arrive. However... with my new cakes stackers system... I am loving being able to put a cake together and go with it... If it is a cake that they do not want to be responsible to return anything I usually just assemble on site... which can be stressful you have to pack your "kit" of supplies to finish with... I always take some dish towels that are moist in a zip loc bag, extra towels to lay on the table so I don't make a mess on their table cloth... etc.
