Hi Kim, I've done leopard print using white fondant.  I would think this same method would work if you used red fondant or just did red instead of the brown in the center.  I diluted black food color gel with vodka and made 'paint'.  I took a flat small paintbrush and did odd shaped circles  - most not completed .  I sort of wiggled the brush as I painted the designs to get a rough edge.  Then dotted the middle with brown.    Hope this made sense.  I'm attaching a photo of the one I did.
