I've been asked ship a cake. I have a client who wants one of my painted cakes, so I'm not too worried about icing or sugar decorations being messed up in-transit. But I am worried about the "painting" getting messed up with any condensation or water leakage. I'm also wondering if I quoted too high a price!
I wanted to know if anyone here has shipped a cake and how they priced their cake to include the shipping and packaging.
I know it must be shipped overnight and I'm betting it should probably be shipped frozen, with dry ice/ice packs, and probably in a styrofoam container, but geez that's a lot of time and effort for a 6 or 8" cake!
I also just don't know if I'm over or under-charging. My painted cakes start at $75. They are very time consuming, so I approach it like a custom painting, KWIM? Then there's the packaging and shipping costs, which amounts to well over $80 with FedEx... I basically told the client that my 6" round costs $75 and an 8" round costs $90. Then I told him that shipping (if he didn't have a FedEx account already) might be around $78. Ugh. So, he'd be paying upwards of $150 for a 6" round cake!
But then I didn't feel so bad when I looked at Dean and Deluca online and saw what they charged for their cakes... Yikes! And they definitely don't do what I do!
Thanks for any words of wisdom.
