Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi all,
I am absolutely terrible with measurements, numbers, anything mathematical of the sort... So if this question is really stupid, I apologise in advance...

I have a rectangle sheet cake pan measuring 9x13x3.

I have a certain cake mix I want to use which comes in 580gram boxes. The box says to put the prepared mix into a 20x7 round cake tin.

If I want to make it in my sheet cake tin... How many boxes should I use?? I can't seem to figure out how to convert the amounts.

If u could tell me how many boxes I will need ... And even give me tips on how to work it out in the future id be so greatful. Lolll can u tell I'm a novice baker? Lolll

Answer: 2.5x boxed mix with fit in the sheet pan

Maths:

volume of round pan = 22/7 [pi] x 10 [radius] x 10 [radius] x 7 [height] = 2200 cc

volume of sheet = 9 x 13 x 3 = 351 cubic inches

calculation:

Changing Metric to Imperial ... round pan 2200cc = 134.25 cubic inches ... the cake mix fits in this

sheet pan ... 351/134.25 = 2.615 or approx 2 1/2 times required if using that cake mix

I worked this out a different way, but came up with pretty much the same answer.  Hopefully, that is not by coincidence, but it's how I work it out when I want to make recipes in a different sized tin.

Your tin - 9 x 13 x 3 = total area of 351

Round tin for box mix - 20 x 7 = total area of 140

351 divided by 140 = 2.5 (near as damn it).

ThankU ladies! I took a wild guess as I baked it a few days ago and went with two boxes. Your both spot on, 2 and a half would have fit the Pan perfectly! Still turned out okay but just not as high as it could have been.
Now if I can just wrap my head around one of the two math methods... Lol.

Hey, you know what Penny?  I just had another way more simple idea.  580g is the same as 580ml.  So if you have a measuring jug, measure out 580ml of water and pour it into your sheet tin.  Is it enough?  No.  Measure out another 580ml and pour that in - you get the idea?  When your sheet tin looks like it's got enough in it, then the amount of ml you have put in will be the amount of grammes of cake mix you want.  No maths required except for keeping track of the amount of water you used.  Not very scientific, but I reckon it might work...........
