Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hey Everyone,

I am curious about how everyone determines servings.  I know that most people charge per serving and tag on extra for fondant figures and extra detail.  What I am curious about is:

Is there a difference in serving size for a wedding vs. a kid's birthday cake vs. baby shower?  Or, is a serving, a serving is a serving?

Also, I've seen on-line a couple ads for cake business software that allows you to breakdown your costs, keep your orders, store pics, etc.  Does anyone use any of these?  And, how is it working for you?

As always, I thank everyone for their input.

I think it's better to keep serving size the same regardless of type of cakes.   Some people differentiates it, but it's confusing to consumers.  For example, a cake square cake that's 10x10x4, it's serves 50 and it's cut into 2x1x4 per serving.

Yes Ken....there is a site: cakeboss.com, a cake software site. They do a explanation.

Also google: Adventures in cake decorating.....on there is the "Cakulator"     It figures the price for wedding cake slice, party slice etc.

I use the same servings chart (Wilton wedding) for all my cakes, regardless of event.  If the client wants more cake, then they order and pay for more cake.  A 1x2x4 inch slice of cake is plenty (except for my husband!) and usually more than a child will eat.

As for Cakeboss software, I love it!  I can keep up with customers, expenses, shopping lists, orders, etc. all in one place.

Great.  Thanks for the responses.
