Some of the cakes you see require molds for the handles and such. Start with one you don't have to purchase specialty tools, get the feel of it and then decide what you want to invest in. Handles and cording can be extruded from a clay extruder. This tool has many uses so it is a good investment. Take a look at this blog to see a picture - http://www.cakeswebake.com/profiles/blogs/sugar-shaper
Shay - basic straps can be done using a simple long strip of poster board cut in the width you want and a pizza cutter. Then, if you have the Wilton gumpaste tool kit, you can use what I call the spiky wheel (I'm sure it has an official name - LOL) to make the stitching marks. If you are making handles that stand up, that's a whole different ballgame and someone else may be able to help.
No i think im going to take the easy route first time around and thanks for the idea for the straps i was thinking i may can do that but wanted to be sure first...Deah I checked out the tool and ohhhhh i want one lol im going to use you ladies ideas and will soon be posting my finished purse cake wish me luck lol
Shay I hope you are feeling better! I am having knee surgery next week so I know what you mean about being gone. I have not been on here much just trying to get everything done before surgery!!!!

As for the purse cakes... It is really easy to bake your cakes in a loaf pans and carve from there. The loaf pans are a nice size to start with.... Sharon Zambito just released or is just releasing a DVD on Purses... if you are serious about purse cakes I am sure it will be good. I have most of her DVD's and not a one is bad!!!
