Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Over the weekend I made a stack of books cake for someone I work with. It was three 9x13 cakes covered in fondant and stacked. I also hand cut all the details to the cake. It went with a 3d Dr. Seuss smash cake that was 7" tall covered in fondant. I heard someone complain about the cost, but I don't think I charged that much. Can anyone tell me what you would have charged for it?

The second post it says price matrix.xls that is what I have and I have just altered it. If you can't download it let me know. This includes EVERYTHING the excel spread sheet has several pages, breaks everything down. You can change the amounts and alter them to fit your costs and your needs. I also have mine, but some people have trouble opening it. I can PM it to you if you would like. Let me know if this helps.

Thank you Louise and June. You have both been very helpful : )
Yes June - I am amazed at the fact that the people for wedding cakes don't say a word about the price of the cake. It is the celebration cakes that I seem to have the most trouble with : (
Than you Jackie! This will be a big help.
Yup
But in retrospect, even tho I baked all my life, didn't realize the time it took to put together a 2,3 or 4 tired cake with decorations.... be it gumpaste flowers or other gumpaste/fondant decorations. ... I made those character cakes, you known the Wilton pans, the star tipped ones, for my kids when they were growing up. I never could have afforded a Suess cake like yours for my children. Yours was simple and just the right size. I must confess, when I see large 3-4 tier elaborate cakes for 2-3 yr. old birthday party, I think.... who are they trying to impress???! Certainly not the 2-3 yr. old.... They don't give a fig.... its the adults. Reminds me of the over the top celebrations & cakes I see Buddy do for his family on the Cake Boss..... But after all, he is Italian.... They do big!!

I agree June, the big cakes for young children are certainly not for the children, but they are so darn cute! I know I could not afford one of Penny's cakes and I definitely can't do what she did either. Maybe one day, thankfully all of my friends have young children for me to make cakes for. I can't wait for my wilton classes to start so I can start refining my skills.
