Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Do any of you draw out your cake? By hand use a computer program? If so what do you use.  I know on the TV shows, and challenges they always have some sort of drawing, that look real professional.  I guess I was wondering if that is something most decorators do.

I am just starting out so I have a hard time designing. But when I have an idea I do a very basic scetch. And when I say very basic I mean very basic because I can't draw at all. Lol. It's just something to give me a basic idea of what I want to do.
I have drawn out one cake, and colored it in... We were sitting around one night. My cake didn't come out like the picture at all. My drawing was a little to much.

I did play with a computer program the other day at work sort of trying to draw it out. Again really didn't come out the same, but this time the drawing was more basic.

Thanks for the replies, it was my first discussion and it was fun to get replies!
I always draw out my cake designs and use colored pencils to get a realistic vision of my design. It helps me to determine all the components I'll need. After drawing the design, I then list what gumpaste/fondant items I will need to cut or mold, what colored icings I need to prepare, etc. My cakes don't always come out exactly the way I designed them, but it's usually because I end up adding elements to what I have drawn on paper. I typically make up my gumpaste and fondant elements well in advance, and have all my icings colored prior to starting the actual decorating process. Having my design drawn out helps me to be much more prepared and the decorating goes more smoothly.
i draw out cakes sketches too, and I can't draw worth a dang either. But putting it down on paper helps to remind me of the vision in my head...also on the sketch, because the details are vague (like squiggly circles to represent flowers) I draw arrows to note what the detail is. I also start listing what I will need (how much fondant to make, how much icing, what kinds of supplies and sometimes if I have enough room I add my grocery list.) and that works for me, I use colored pencils too even though I know it may not even come close to the actual color I plan on.....all of this serves to remind me of what is in my head...because I was robbed at brith of the gift of translation from brain to hand :D.
I have the Wedding Cake Design Pro Software and I do like it. But... there are not enough options in making the more up to date cakes like wonky cakes... and the more "in" decorations. I do use it though to print a blank picture of a cake you can choose between squares, rounds, hex, petal shapes and how many tiers you want...etc. It is a pretty cool program but is time consuming but you do get a nice looking design ... I will post a couple blank templates so you can see what they look like... I just cleaned all my old designs off so my computer would not have so much stuff on it so I don't have but a couple examples. I just love printing off the templates and sketching on them.

I just checked their website....there are many upgrades that I did not know about. I have had the software for a little over 2 years now and there are so many options.. .gotta go order them! Makes life easier!
Here is the website....

That is really kewl ,, may i ask where you bought the software?
I posted the link above. I got it online. Have never seen it anywhere else. It is fun to play with
Thanks Jeri...That is really neat. I think I may have to look into getting that. What would be great is if you could take cricut art and be able to put it in. That is who needs to make this kind of software. Provo Craft so you can design your cake not just what you want to cut on the Cricut Cake. Thanks so much for passing this on to us all.
Please do not give Provo Craft the idea... they will over price it by a long shot... I have their design studio for my cricut and it really does not do all that and it was the same price as the Wedding Cake Pro... If you are looking for a program that works with your cricut for designs.. .look into the sure cuts alot program. I have not used it but have seen a lot of things produced with it from the cricut and it is pretty amazing. I have a cake to do tonight on the WCDP program so I will share the design when I am finished.
It is very important to sketch the cake because the customer may have a very diferent vision of what the cake should be...colored pencils help with color schemes and there is a record of the design in case there is a discrepancy in what the customer ordered. Hope that helps. Also dont worry about not being able to draw...basic shapes with line drawings of decorations will be much better than nothing at all.
