Hey everyone,

Just looking for some advice on wether buttercream or frosting can be painted on with food color? I painted on MMF before, it worked out really well but I someone who wants a cake and would prefer buttercream or frosting. Has anyone done that before?

I have painted on the crusting buttercream with pure grain drinking alcohol mixed with gel food coloring. I have done it a few different times. It does work, you just have to take your time with it.
Did it bleed at all?

SO as long as the bc icing has gotten hard or crusted as you call it , you can pain on it , but with alchocohol?, can you taste the alchohol? yes i noo i am spelling that worn g, thats one of the words i tend to forget how to spell LOL

It can be painted as long as it's well crusted an you are using a good brush. If it's a non crusting buttercream, I don't think it can be done.
I'm guessing the alcohol evoporates quickly and you can not taste it.

The alcohol does evaporate and you can not taste it at all. They say that vanilla extract can be used because it has an alcohol base or vodka. I like using the alcohol as it does dry faster on the crusting buttercream. If it is not a crusting buttercream and it's regular fluffy frosting it will not work. I use this same technique to paint on my fondant if I don't use my airbrush.

No, I haven't had any problems with it bleeding.

If you take a look at my photos the Book Birthday cake was all hand painted with this technique.

I like to pipe a basic shape then use a paintbrush to add some depth and blend color. Here's a video where I did that with a bird on a branch (all buttercream):
