Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi all,

I'm new to this group so a massive hello to you all. :)

I'm an amateur baker, I have always enjoyed baking and decorating and just recently got really in to it. However I am not brilliant at it, and would love some help and advice.

I have a jewellery box cake to make for June and was wondering if it would be possible to make edible jewellery out of edible diamonds and such? How would i go about it? I wondered whether the bead mould with diamonds pushed into the fondant would work?

Thanks in advance :)

Hi Ann,

There are many different ways to make gems. For pearls you can use bead mold for strands of pearl, or cut them up individually to form individual loose pearls.  For other faceted gem stones, there are gem molds you could use to form gems out of fondant or gum paste.  Gum paste works better since it's firmer, and when it's dried, paint them with luster dust or disco dust.  If you are ready to be a little be more adventurous, pour melted sugar or isomalt into gem silicone mold.  When it cools, it'll give you clear gem.  You could color the melted sugar with food coloring to give colors to your gem.

Thanks for that, how would i go about making those into necklaces or rings? Just moulding the fondant/gum paste into the right shapes and sticking the gems on to them?

I would also go the Isomalt route. You can go on youtube and see videos on making them. I go on there all the time just to watch them and pass time. Check them out. Best of luck and welcome to this site.

You could use the bottom end one of your piping tips as a guide to cut out round balls of white/ivory 50/50 fondant/gumpaste. Roll into small balls. Let them dry a little bit. Cut a length of fishing line, thread through a needle, push the  needle & line through all the balls/pearls you have made. If you want take a very small dab of clear corn syrup and place on the inside of each ball while on the fishing line & gently press the balls together.

Let your "necklace" dry. You can then dust with pearl dust, disco dust to make them sparkle.

As far as a ring, depends on what size. I made a engagement cake  & I bought a dollar store ring, just painted the actual "gem" the colour of brides stone. Never made a ring from fondant/gumpaste, so couldn't help you there.
