New to cake decorating: CROSS CAKE IDEAS?

Hi everyone!  I'm taking the first course of the Wilton classes, so I'm fairly new to decorating.

For Easter, I'm making the cross cake.  I have no idea how to use fondant...only butter cream.  Does anyone have any ideas on how to decorate the cake that will be simple and pretty?  nothing too fancy :)

The pan comes with instructions, but mostly for fondant.  There's one that uses butter cream, but it has tons of flowers (not up to flowers yet :)
