Patricia, that was how I first started using gum paste was by making my own. Now I usually just add tylose powder or Gum Tragacanth to the fondant that I am using and get just as good results. The more powder, the stiffer and harder it becomes.
GUMPASTE RECIPE USING TYLOSE I use this recipe: http://www.sugarcraft.com/catalog/gumpaste/gp-recipes.htm
I have never purchased premade tylose so I cannot judge which is better all I know is that this recipe works. The brands of tylose differ so the amount you need will vary. CAI tylose powder works great for this recipe. This is another one of those things that you need to make and try out several times to see how much your paste needs altering. I took a flower making class with Nicholas Lodge and he gives you his recipe and you work with it there in class. Something to note is that even though everyone had the same recipe made by his staff (we didn't make our own in class) some people were having trouble due to their body temperature. His classes are very well organized (just thought I would throw that out there in case anyone was interested in his instruction).
Also the brand of powdered sugar makes a difference (some have different amounts of cornstarch) so if you start out with one brand and are altering your recipe with tylose amounts you may want to continue to work with that same brand of powdered sugar so you aren't driving yourself crazy with the results you are getting.
You can also make this recipe with dried egg whites but they have to be reconstituted prior to adding to the recipe. I would post the recipe he gave in class (very close to the one on the sugarpaste page) however do not feel it is my place to do so.
This is good to know, Shirley. I have trouble with my petals and leafs breaking and am also looking for a harder gum paste recipe. Thank you both Glenda and Shirley.

I too use Nicholass Lodges Tylose gumpaste recipe, it works every time. Rolls out thinly without tearing and dries quickly for flowers. In a pinch I have kneaded in Tylose powder to rolled fondant and it works, however it doesn't have the strength of Nic's gumpaste recipe. The recipe is listed on his website.
Here is a great recipe.
Thank you all. Linda that is a great video. one more thing is tylos powder the same as gumtex I have that. When I went to Micheals looking for Tylos powder they didnt have any..
I use the tylose powder from Confectionery Arts International or CAI tylose powder. You can look them up and order from the company.

To anyone looking for Nicholas Lodge http://www.nicholaslodge.com/ . I don't think he posts his tylose gumpaste recipe there anymore.

Oh my goodness, his website is no longer online, or at least I can't find it. But here is his recipe from right here on Cakes We Bake. The only difference I noticed is Nic's recipe calls for 12 teaspoons Tylose Powder and 3 T. Crisco shortening.
