Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi My Cake Friends,

This weekend I made my grand-niece's baptism cake (I am not a professional baker) but I can bake well.  I made a 3 tiered cake covered in fondant and it was ivory.  My niece wanted it shiny so I used ivory pearl dust.  I brushed the brush in the dust and then smooched it around on a mat to evenly distribute but it still looked kind of streaky on the cake.  Any ideas what I did wrong or what a better procedure would be for next time?  As always, I appreciate any ideas I get.

That is nice, I live a little away from Long Island, I am in Staten Island.  I work in New York City (Manhattan) and that is where I go to the cake supply stores.  There is one that has almost anything you can ever want but their attitude isn't so nice, so I only go to that one when I absolutely have to, lucky for me I have choices! But I am going to check out Tiffany's place, never even saw that come up when I googled cake bakeware suppliers.   I have never been to Canada but hope to one day, too bad they don't cut you guys a break with the shipping charges, but here in the US the shipping cost are slowly rising each time our stamp goes up, so I guess it is just all over.

Well Tiffany & Susan

I should consider myself fortunate as I am 1 hour outside of Toronto. There are 3 large, & several suppliers their.

I have never really "googled" cake supply in the Buffalo/Niagara Falla USA area. Know there is a very large Micheal's their, but unless I know the prices, not going to drive over the border unless I have an occasion to do so. My bro-in-law & sis-in-law drive over to grocery shop at least once a mnth. What gets me is our dollar is either at par, or close to, and yet the price of shipping has NOT dropped. Can't figure that one out. So no encouragement there to shop online for me.

Susan, I have an American friend who grew up in Long Island NY.  She has been here for close to 53 yrs. Believe she is a dual citizen now.

Well I saw a report on the postal service  both in USA & Canada, and they are REALLY  hurting. NO one mails letters anymore because of social media. Everyone pays their bills online, except for the "older folk", and they are getting less & less. They haven't kept up with technology. Should have offered "deals" for online  mail or something. They are losing billions on both sides of border. Think they may go the way of the dodo bird soon.

Oops

Hubby says Canadian postal service is in the red. It is the American Postal service that is bleeding. :o(

Pearl aerosol luster spray! It has changed my life! lol! At $11.99 per can it is quite a bargain, the can lasts for a GOOD while, and it makes everything very sparkly! Of course my slogan is "Work smarter, not harder" so it may seem the easy way out, but the results are very beautiful.

Well, well, well......you DO learn something new everyday!!!!  Especially on CWB.  Thanks for the tip Christine.

I am making 2 small wedding cakes to cut for my nephew & his bride this May. On hers, I want a "victorian" look, so I wanted some sort of lustre. I just checked out one of my cake suppliers I go to, and they carry PME spray lustre/3.5 oz for $15.  That sound much bettter than the 2 ounces of powder for $6.99.  Funny, I have to make a run there for a few other things, so I'm gonna ck that out.

Thanks

Hi Christina,

As June said you learn something everyday from this cite.  Thank you so much for the tip, I will be going over to one of my stores to check out also.  Decided I need to practice and know what works before I attempt my next cake!

VODKA! Mix your luster dust and vodka together until it has a paint like consistency then paint it all over the cake. The vodka evaporates, but it leaves an even beautiful coat of the luster dust. Depending on the vodka to dust ratio, you can get a heavier or lighter look :)
