Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

How to you go about becoming a licensed baker?  I often make cakes or cookies for my friends and they always say "why don't you start a business."  I am just throwing the idea around but I'm wondering how difficult it is to become a licensed baker.  At most banquet halls where I live you can only order/bring a cake from a licensed baker.

Tiffany, rules and regulations vary enormously around the world and in the US, I believe that they vary from state to state as well.

Check with your state, city and county government offices for specific requirements for your location.  If there is a  local Small Business Development Center in your area, they can help you too.

Here where I live in Canada, #1. You need a business license from the city, to either work out of your home, or a brick and mortar store. #2. You have to be licenced and checked out twice yearly by the local health dept. #3. Then there's getting sorting out certain tax forms you need. One here is retail tax form.... As Katy says, it varies State to State, even city/town/community to city/town/community. It amazes me the difference between my city, and literally the one adjacent to me. Only 20 min, but a world of difference in the rules. Agree with Katy, check with your business development, or local city hall.
