Rhea, you can also create lace effect with a lace mould (depending what you can get hold of in SA) and gumpaste. It will be a slightly heavier look than sugarveil, but if you get your gumpaste thin enough, it will look lovely. Check out the photos on Sandra I. Vazquez Lossiseroni . She makes beautiful vintage style cakes and uses moulds. The other thing you can do (which is also very simple and easy to do), is pipe cornelli lace effect with royal icing, like so - http://www.cakeswebake.com/photo/008-17/prev?context=location. It really does give a beautifully delicate effect.
Thank you June and Katy. Katy I have looked at the photos you linked. It definitely gave me new purposes for the moulds I already have. I have located a supplier of sugarveil and chrystal lace that also stocks lace moulds in SA. Since I am seriously considering doing the cakes full time next year I might as well invest!
