I need to make a wedding cake in November and the bride wants a vintage look with lace. I saw tutorials using "sugarveil" and could try to locate a supplier in South Africa. But please recommend the best material and method since I am totaly a novice when it comes to these details. Thanks!

Here is a recipe for homemade sugar veil posted here by Goreti. I haven't tried it, but she has and apparently, it works pretty good. Think Goreti said it didn't tasted so good, but assume you can add some extract/flavouring. I also have another lace type recipe given to me by Goreti. I will post the link below. Did you also think about using a stencil and applying either Royal/BC icing to create a lace look? I created a lace affect on a wedding dress cake by imprinting a Lacey placemat into my fondant, then brushing with ivory lustre dust. Looked very pretty. It really depends on what kind of vintage look your bride wants. Sugar veil is expensive so just maybe these suggestion might be helpful.... :o)

You can increase the amount of ingredients if you need more of it.
Here goes..
1 Tbsp Tylose
1/4 cup BOILING Water
1Tbsp confectioner sugar
2 level tbsp corn starch
1/4 tsp meringue powder/egg white powder
1/2 tsp. corn syrup
Pinch of white icing color or one of your choice color

Add Tylose to boiling water and with a small fork mix until you get a clear mixture.
When mix is clear, add confectioner sugar and mix, then add your cornstarch and mix again. Add the meringue powder and mix again. Then add your corn syrup.
Add coloring after this has been mixed.

this mix can be kept in the refrigerator for a week. To work with it leave it at room temperature. Once you have made the lace, you can store it in a plastic zip lock bag.
To restore the elasticity, just place a damp kitchen towel on top, but not too long... keep checking it.

Thank you for the reply and recipe, June, I will try to find all the ingredients here and make it. And if the gummi candy doesnt work for the lace I would still be my childrens hero if I can pull the bears off!
Your welcome Rhea
I haven't tried this recipe yet as I don't have a "lace mould". Since caking is a hobby for me, have been looking for something cheap. Not easy to find. The tylose powder is also cmc, or gum trag, etc. All the same thing. Used to make gumpaste. Good luck.

Rhea, you can also create lace effect with a lace mould (depending what you can get hold of in SA) and gumpaste.  It will be a slightly heavier look than sugarveil, but if you get your gumpaste thin enough, it will look lovely.  Check out the photos on Sandra I. Vazquez Lossiseroni .  She makes beautiful vintage style cakes and uses moulds.  The other thing you can do (which is also very simple and easy to do), is pipe cornelli lace effect with royal icing, like so - http://www.cakeswebake.com/photo/008-17/prev?context=location.  It really does give a beautifully delicate effect.

Thank you June and Katy.  Katy I have looked at the photos you linked.  It definitely gave me new purposes for the moulds I already have.  I have located a supplier of sugarveil and chrystal lace  that also stocks lace moulds in SA. Since I am seriously considering doing the cakes full time next year I might as well invest!
