Thanks for asking. The decorations may be made in any medium you'd like, though my intent was to give beginners an excuse to work on their piping skills. The idea behind this contest is to give folks a reason to work on perfecting beginners' techniques.  The scoring is designed to encourage people to try methods they haven't perfected yet, effort is just as valuable here as the appearance of your cake, creativity is just as valuable as skill.  I'm process not product oriented.  If you mostly work with fondant decorations try butter cream, try something new, or use this as an opportunity to develop skills that you wouldn't attempt on something you're making for your cousin's birthday party...

I'm not sure I fully understand the rules. I got that the cake must be covered in a pipable icing, but can the decorations be made from anything else? I've seen a wide variety of different mediums being used for decorations in this competition. I just wanted to make sure of the rules before I start my entry.

My name is Rhonda Goodwin

and I don't believe my first cake was within the contest rules.

I only have one picture so I hope this will be okay.

My cake is a double layer French Vanilla cake with Banana flavored buttercream Icing, the filling is banana pudding.

butterflies are made with rice paper.

The cake is a white cake with buttercream icing. Coaster topper is made of fondant. Made for a co-worker who loves to spend all her summer weekends at Cedar Point and ride roller coasters.

Hello JJ,

I'm living in India. Am I eligible to enter this contest? Is it allowed to use decorations (flowers, etc.) in fondant?

Thanks.

You may certainly enter the contest.  I can't guarantee shipping of prizes out side of the 48 contiguous states but I will do my best.  As for the bragging rights, they are all yours if you win!
