Hello ladies,

I am hoping someone can help me out...

I would like to do a cake with a rip/explosion effect, but I'm not sure how to do it. Can someone assist with the steps? Or if there is a tutorial I can watch?

I've attached a picture of what i would like to do. The 2 tone colors...

Meera - this is actually quite easy to do. You simply cut triangles in the size and colors you want - your bottom color slightly larger than your top. Lay the two colors together and use a small amount of water to adhere them. Then drape the fondant over a tube (paper towel tubes work well for this, or a small rolling pin, or any other cylindrical shaped item you may have that you don't need to use for a few days. You can also roll up waxed paper and use that) and allow it to air dry for a few days. It will hold it's shape. You may want to make a few extra in case of breakage. To adhere it to the cake, just put a dab of water along the edge of each piece and put it in place. I hope this makes sense.
Oh Eileen, you mean to say that each curl has been stuck directly on the cake that is covered entirely with fondant? So i would have to make these curls....
That's how I would do it. If you wait until after you cover the cake and try to use the fondant that's on the cake, you may not get clean cuts.

I agree with Eileen, if you look closely you can tell they were each put on by themselves. even if you were able to get clean cuts after the fondant is on the cake, you still have to put something in to allow the fondant to dry in the curl shape.

I did an easter cake with an explosion and it was pretty simple: Start with a butter creamed cake, place a piece of fondant a little bigger than the explosion area would be on the cake, then place parchment paper on top of that, put another piece of fondant with the contrasting color on top of the parchment paper. Then cover the cake with the final layer of fondant. With a sharp knife mark your center and cut gently through to the parchment paper...as an example if you wanted a 4 inch burst I would cut about 1-1/2 inches on each side of the center point, the amount of points you want would determine how many cuts you should make. Then just roll back...mine kept their shape fine without support but I did need to put a dap of gumpaste glue to keep them from unrolling a little. I did put an attachment but....if it doesn't work I believe I have this cake posted in my photo's on my page. Hope this helps! Cheers

Oops...forgot to mention that you need to gently lift the parchment paper out once your burst is done...I just used a sharp point to grab a hold of it and pull it out.
You can use either method suggested but the easiest is the way Eileen suggested and if you look closely at the photo you have attached that is how this cake has been done. It is not a hard process at all but does add a pop to the cakes!
