Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

well My daughter is turning three and I'm going to tackle fondant for her cake. I'm a moron you see... I throw myself into the deep end immediately instead of starting small. I did do one simple round cake with fondant for the first time a few months back. I made the mistake of deciding to do it all in one go. Bake my cake from scratch, layer the cake or "tort" it, whatever, And Make and use marshmallow fondant for the first time. It wasn't a total disaster... It was a bit wonky and the fondant was so thick nobody could eat it all haha. But not bad for a first try.

Now... The cake I'm going to create is a Larry Boy cake. He is a superhero cuecumber from the children's cartoon called veggietales. Google is your friend if you don't know who he is. My daughter LOVES him. I've looked up inspiration on how to make him and decided what I want to do. I'm all set for the eyes, I'm using LCMs to make them bulge. (I think in other countries LCMs go by another name but it's this sticky ricebubble treat you can manipulate the shape of pretty easily) anyways two questions.

1. What do you think I should use for his plunger ears? I've never used gum paste. I was considering trying to make the plungers out of fondant and leave out to dry out???

2. My main question, I want Larry to be 3D-ish not just flat. But how would I go about building him up without leaving a crumby uneven mess?? I know a decent crumb coat will help with some mess but still, the less bad shape the better :-)
How do i build up the cake so that the fondant still looks smooth not bumpy and lumpy?

Thanks so much!

LCM's sound like Rice Krispie Treats (RKT's) here.

I know Larry Boy well.  My suggestion to you would be to make a cake (either a sheet cake or round layer) and decorate it in some way to represent Larry Boy (a scene or a theme - even write things like his silly songs and other quotes).  Then build Larry Boy out of the LCM/RKT's.  Make sure your mixture is stiff enough to set but pliable enough to mold fairly smooth.  Cover Larry Boy with fondant (could be tricky, but take your time).  Add his eyes, etc.  For the ears you could use stiffened fondant - here we use Tylose and I know there are other products but others would have to help you there.

I would be really interested in seeing your results!

You may want to look at this site.  There is a picture of a cake and a few instructions.  Good luck==http://www.coolest-birthday-cakes.com/childrens-cake.html#c7

That is actually a pretty good copy of Larry Boy Goreti...the 1st one with the fondant. Pretty good instructions.

Thanks, I have seen that cake and it is well done but as I said I'm looking to make him more 3D If that makes sense... With his bulgy eyes and a more cuecumber-like in shape if that makes sense. Perhaps I should ask this question in the baking section? As I want to know how to make his shape without sacrificing smoothness. I was thinking of cutting his shape from a sheet cake, just like the lady did in that link, then using the leftover cake to build it up. Do you think putting the leftover cake in the food processor and then mooshing it on top of the cake in the correct shape would help keep it smoother or make it worse? Thanks for all ur replies, much appreciated!

Ok Penny
I see what you are trying to achieve. I wouldn't put cake in the food processor. Think it would turn to mush. I would make a sheet cake. You can put in freezer, then when frozen, take cake out, and easily cut out a cucumber shape. Much easier to work with hard cake then soft. Then for Larry's head, a 8" round placed on top of the sheet cake. That way it "stands out". I would make his eyes & nose from Rice Crispie treats, or whatever your "treat" name is. Cover in fondant, and place on the 8" round. That should give a more 3D look.
Hope this helps. :0)

thankyou June :-)

still tossing up a few ideas but will definately freeze the cake! what a great idea!

im insane....seriously. I should really be doing a cake from a wilton pan and star tip the whole thing... seeing as thats what i hear everyone should start with... but i cant help myself.

I'll let y'all know how it goes. The party is on the 1st of September... So ill upload pic around then :-)

cross your fingers for me and say some prayers... lolll

My sis-in-law use to do 3d cards. So I know the idea is to build in layers. That is why I sugested the 8" on top of the sheet. I did the same type of cakes for my children when they were small....wilton theme pan....star tip away.

Trust me Penny, if I had had the ability back then I do now, my cakes would have been a lot more creative!!!

Sept 1st gives you a bit of time to play around.  Have fun, lookin forward to the pics.

Oh by the way....love your profile pic...... so 1950's.....my Mom had the same mix master on the counter!!!!!

lol i cant say i have the ability... will find out next week. I think Im just a bit too ambitious for my own good. If it doesnt work out itll be a phone call to my sister in law to drop into the cheesecake shop on her way up hahaha, hopefully that doesnt happen haha.

heh yeh i chose the profile pic because I love the 50's :-) was born in the wrong era I reckon. I totally dig the whole 50's housewife stay at home mum thing. I should not have been born in the 80's... the 60's changed everything and women my age are "burning bras" more fiercely than the generation before them...misfit indeed.

aaanyways back to cakes... cant wait to post up my first pic! heres hoping!

Well my dear I WAS born in the 50's.....1951 to be specific.  Went through the 60's, 70's... in the 80's...raising children.

2012...all grown up. One gone & married...one working, still  at home & trying to pay off school debt so he can move out. Thinking in a year or 2, he will be married also.  Oh my...where did the time go?????  My absolute best years were when I stayed home with my children for 11 yrs, before I went back to work part time.  Such fond memories.    :o)

Ooh you have grandchildren to look forward to then!! How wonderful :-) its been said that grandchildren are a reward from God for not killing your own children when you thought of it lollll. I'm looking forward to learning alot about cake deco from the likes of you :-)

I am DYING for grandchildren.  Actually my daughter just lost a pregnancy a couple of months ago. Very upsetting. She just moved to another province  :o(  ...new job...new house. Flying out in 2 weeks to see her & sn-in-lw.  Hopefully, soon,  I will have a little wee grandchild....have to wait & see.  That will be wonderful,  trouble is tho,  she will be too far away for me to make any b-day cakes.

oh im sorry to hear about your daughters miscarriage. She must have been devistated. Its kind of good that she has some new things going on with the move and the job, kind of like a fresh start? Not good for you though :-( i cant imagine how hard it would be living far away from your kids. But you never know what 5 yrs or so can do. They might come back? Mehhh to not being able to do cakes for your future grandkiddies! Perhaps your son will stay close by, then when he has kids you can spoil them with fab cakes!
