The food color alone might not have the best flavor. Do you have any cake decorating supplies? If you have a picture of him you could take it to the bakery if they have a printer and have an edible image made from the picture and put it on the cake. Sorry you are having problems!
Publix Bakery sells sheet cakes without frosting. You can prepare your own buttercream and add the color as you need it, also cut the sheet cake as the desire shape.
you can paint with Buttercream icing! Soft thinned buttercream icing with the colors you want added can be painted onto buttercream or fondant iced cakes! We used to do this in a bakery that I worked at all the time to paint people's faces on cakes or landscaped backgrounds. I have even built structures from modeling chocolate and then painted them with thinned buttercream icing. And, if you use Vodka to thin the icing it will crust over really hard. You can even use pearl dust in this to add sheen. I may have been too late to help you with your cake but it may help someone else curious about this too.
