Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi everyone,

Im making a horse theme  cake of my daughters 7th bday party.. At first I was doing a tier cake..but changed my approuch...  I thought i would do a 2 layer shape of a horse head.. buttercream with fondant for the ears/bridle/ reins.. etc..  i was going to cover the cake board with red fondant and pipe white to look like a bandana, i thought about laying it on top of the board instead of covering it.. and have "hay" sticking out under the edges of the bandana. and have the horses head on the bandana.  I have it all ifgured out but not sure how to do the hay.

Should I just do fondant strips?  or pipe it?   I dont want to do coconut..  any ideas?

I appreciate the input :)

I have used chow mein noodles mixed with melted peanut butter chips to make hay stacks. And...the kids liked to eat them!
just going to be tufts sticking out under the bandana here and there around the edge of it
