It also helps to crumb coat with a thin layer of BC before doing the swirls.
I agree about the consistency of the icing being an issue. I also wonder if perhaps your crumb coat had crusted over too much? If it was really dry, that could have stopped the piping from sticking to it. Did you make sure that you piped right up to the crumb coat so your piping was touching everywhere? If you had some air pockets and one doesn't stick then it will tend to drag others off with it.
