Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hello, my name is Erica and I wanted to share some of my depressed thoughts and hope I can get good insights from yall. I just started a while ago trying to learn how to make cakes, since it wasn't very easy for me to learn, I had alot of bumps in road. Well now I can say I am an okay cake decorator. I wanted to make a cake business, but it is not going as I wanted it to. I really don't know how to advertise myself, also. I started baking cakes for a family relative, which at first she told me that mycakes were too dry, so I fix it ,and she liked it. So then she orderd 2 cakes from me and I charged her $60.dollars they all liked it. But then they just had a birthday party and she did not ask me to make her the cake. She ordered from someone else, I felt kind of annoyed and depressed, since I felt that maybe I am not good for cake making or was it too expensive? It has been quite awhile since I haven't made a cake, since I also have another dilemma I am studying for my license exam in order to be a licensed professional counselor. So I have to put all my mind and body to this exam. So that means for awhile I can't worry about cakes and it's hurting me. Am I going crazy  or should I just forget about caking decorating? Please someone give me some advice, Whatever advice will be very appreciated.

Thank you for taking your time and reading my comment.

Erica, it sounds like you have a lot going on right now. I think you are having some of the same problems everyone has when they start. As far as pricing goes, you have to remember that you aren't a big box store and your product is better. There will be people who think your prices are too high and you will need to tell them to order from their local grocery. We all have faced that issue.

It sounds to me like you know that you need to put caking on the back burner until you get your licensing finished. So, just resolve to get it going again when you have accomplished that goal. Don't feel guilty about it, it is just life. We all have some things that take over our lives from time to time.

If it makes you feel better, every once in a while bake yourself a test cake - test recipe, test technique, etc. just to keep yourself in the groove. That way there is no pressure for perfection just all experimentation. I find it energizing to figure out something new.

I wish you much luck in your studies, peace in your heart and great caking when the time is right.
Hi, Deah Thank you for your wise words. I feel so much better, just letting all of my frustration out. And your right, I am afraid of forgetting everything I learned from cakes, but your right I would fell guilty not accomplishing my goal or my career for now.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
