Has anyone done a topsy turvy cake with just buttercream - any tips or suggestions?

It's for twin girls who are turning 14. One likes girlie pinks and purples, and the other yellow and black.  Was thinking along the lines of the first tier being flowery pink and purple, the second yellow and black abstract designs like wavy lines and spirals and bringing all the colors together on the third having a few flowers with bees in them.  Again mostly buttercream, the bees would have to be gumpaste of fondant I suppose.  I worry a little about fitting the tiers together being that its not fondant I'm using...

The only one I've done was just BC. Later, I had accomplished professional decorators tell me they wouldn't do a topsy turvy in BC. I didn't have any trouble though. I used the cut out method. It was pretty easy.
The only wonky cakes I have done are in fondant but I know a lady that does them in buttercream and I think she ices them after assembly... not sure about that but that is what I believe she said she does. I can check with her and get back with you.
Jennifer, both of my topsy turvy cakes I have done were in buttercream. I use the cut out method also. I dirty ice them before i stack them, once I stack them then I ice the whole thing, then use the viva papertowel method to smooth them. Both of mine are in my photos, I also put a dowel rod down thru all the layers to hold them together, the only one of my two i had any issues with was the baseball themed one, the bottom complelty fell apart & crumbled on me, so i had to redo it. That was only because I carved the bottom one too small to hold the weight of the top. If I remember right, it ended up being the same size as the top & the top just fell right off because the bottom wasnt big enough. All in all I thought they were just too easy to do, just a little more time consuming. The white one with flowers in my photos was my very first topsy turvy cake, & I am extremely pleased with the way it truned out.
I have done a few in all buttercream. they stack fine and like jennifer I used a dowel rod all the way through but I also used dowels to support each tier.See the mardri gras, in my photos , some decorations are marshmallow fondant and some are buttercream.
If you use chocolate cake use less oil as the choc was crumbly to carve
I've done them in buttercream and its doable. I refrigerate my cakes before stacking. I also use the cut out method.
Hi Jeri, just wondering about topsy turvy cakes .. ive baked 3"cakes. is that high enough or do i need to make another layer? i'm thinking i can just have ganache fillings to make it higher .. ?? ..
