Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I am throwing myself on the mercy of the forum here as a complete newbie.  I only decorate for personal friends and family but love it so always try to challenge myself. My niece wants the "Frozen" Themed cake of course.  I've done a lot of research and seen where people do a hard candy iced pond either from scratch or from melting life savers.  However I saw one thing that concerned me and I cannot find the answer so am hoping you guys can help since your cakes are so amazing!

Someone mentioned the hard candy can "interact" with the moisture from the cake and/or icing and I was wondering if anyone had done this and how I can make sure that if I put the "pond" on the cake the night before her party - am I going to have issues with it either turning gummy, breaking, bleeding etc.?

Also - one person that did lifesavers mentioned combining pina colada and pineapple for a good Ice color but didn't say how many of each - this seems like an easier method for a beginner so didn't know if anyone here had any experience with that either or if you think I could handle making hard candy from scratch for the pond?

Thank you for your time and attention and any help you can offer, it's greatly appreciated!

One alternative to Isomalt, is my GummyGel recipe.  It gives good color & shine, and it can be made to look wavy just by applying to a crumpled piece of sprayed parchment paper or tin foil.  Not too crumpled of course, just enough for the effect you want.  Craftbaker baker used it on 3rdrevolution to do a reflection of Olaf looking into a pond.  She even laid it on an edible sheet that had the picture of Olaf, with the desired writing on it, and the GummyGel picked it all up perfectly, like a transfer, for display on the cake.   Olaf was standing on the cake, and looking at his reflection in the pond.  Hope this helps.   It is also very easy to eat, and taste good when properly flavored.  Kids just luv it!

That looks pretty neat.  I might have to try that, I was thinking about Jello but was afraid it would be too slippery.  How do I find the pictures of craftbakers cake and details? Sorry I'm new here and haven't quite figured it all out yet!

Edited to add:  Nevermind, googled 3rdrevolution and figured it out! Thanks, hadn't seen that site before.

Check my page. I made a blue pond with ice skates for my sons birthday this past January. Simple as punch. It's basically the same recipe as making peanut brittle in the micro. Except you don't add the peanuts or baking soda. Just sugar, white corn syrup, food colouring. I let it "cook" for a few min, then poured on to an aluminum baking sheet. I just let it take on whatever form as it spread. If you want a specific shape, like round, pour into a heat proof Pyrex dish, and let it cool.
Hope this helps.
