I just saw a tutorial on mycakeschool.com on painting on buttercream.  She used a crusting buttercream, gel coloring and vodka.  she practiced on a plate and did tulips.  she said to use a light touch.  it seemed to be very simple.  mycakeschool.com costs to be a member.  hope this helps.
