Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I am having a problem with using the cardboard cake bases that you can buy at Walmart. There's nothing more frustrating than when you spend hours making a fondant cake then during delivery the fondant cracks from the base not being sturdy enough :o( I am just starting my business so I am selling my cakes for lower prices until I get my name out there. I can't afford to buy wood and custom cut every cake base. Any of you have any suggestions or websites that sell sturdy bases, yet are reasonable in price? Thank you in advance!!!

Start with doubling your cardboard round.  Make sure the corrogated pattern runs in opposite directions.  I use double sided tape to stick them together just to make it easier to cover them but you certainly don't have to do that.  Also, try foamcore boards - dollar store find.  It will take multiple layers also but you can triple them and have enough support for a 2 tier cake.  Anything more than 2 tiers and you really should invest in a cake drum.

On a side note, don't undersell yourself to get your name out there.  People will expect you to continue to be the low price.  Once you have that reputation it is hard to get away from it.

Kai - Michael's and JoAnn's carry Wilton's Decorative Cake Bases that are 1/2" thick foil "drums".  They don't sell them at Wal-mart.  Or you can order the drums from sites like Global Sugar Art - www.globalsugarart.com and other cake decorating sites.  I hope this helps!

Thanks for the advice Deah! I've tried doubling them up and it's not as much of an issue as it is when I make 1/4 sheet cakes and the bases for those are so long that they flex so eaily in the middle even with 2 boards, but I am definitely going to have to look into the foamcore boards, thanks again!

And you are very right about underpricing myself.....my hubby and I just talked about it this weekend and he said the same thing. If I want to make a successful business I need to start pricing them the right way from the start ;o)
