Hi all. I'm starting to gather my thoughts and get ideas formulated for my stepdaughters 50th Birthday cake in August. Her life is so busy, she doesn't really have time for hobbies, so instead of a novelty relevant cake, I just want to make her something really elegant and special. Colour wise, I'm thinking ivory, gold and black. Maybe some lacework, or runouts. The questionis - will gold paint work on black? Will it just disappear into a nothingness, or does anyone know a really deep gold that will a) cover black fondant and stand out and b) mix into royal icing for a really deep gold colour. Thanks!

Katy, why don't you mix just a tiny dab of black fondant up and paint on it to find out? As far as royal icing is concerned, take a look at my lattice hearts that I made for that Valentine cake. That is royal icing made in advance to dry, and then I went back with clear alcohol (highest alcohol percent you can find) and then I used gold petal dust mixed with the alcohol and just painted it on. It never dissolved the RI at all. I don't know if you can get a true gold by adding color to the RI mix or not, but I know for a fact that you can paint gold onto RI. I'm wondering if you can get the same affect going onto black fondant?
You are such an inspiration Linda, thank you! I take one look at these and think - I have got to try that! What you suggest seems like a good idea with the black. I already have some black fondant and gold dust, so I will try a sample and see what happens. The hearts look awesome and have really given me some ideas. I was thinking about putting some cameo style silhouettes on one layer, but think I may change that to hearts like this - or I might even try both! Decisions, decisions, I don't want to overdo things and make it too fussy.........As you say, I think the thing is to try experimenting with small amounts and see where it leads. For the alcohol, do I need to get a special kind for cake making, or is it OK just to use something like vodka?
Katy, if Vodka is the highest alcohol content that is available, I would think that it should work. I live in Iowa USA and we have an alcohol called EVERCLEAR that is even higher than Vodka, but few states allow it to be sold because it is so high (maybe I can use it for gasoline if prices keep soaring! lol) I've also used Gin and it works okay too. Katy, if you do try something like these hearts, I greased the bottom of the pans before placing the plastic wrap so that once I was done with the hearts, they would slide right off without getting any grease on the RI. I first cut a heart out of gum paste with a cookie (biscuit) cutter and placed it on the plastic wrap. I did it on the pan because the pan has a convex/concave shape to it on the bottom and I wanted them to puff out some.
