Man, that was an awesome tip, Deah, one I had never heard before. The clown figure that I had made a while ago, once completely dried, the stripes in his pants (red stripes) have completely faded down to a dull redish/pink. I had planned on entering him into the cake show in September, but once I noticed how dull his pants were, I had decided to just skip it. Now that I have this great tip, I may try to revitalize the little guy.

Deah said:…

Meera, some of the wedding colors are extremely hard to match - especially David's Bridal colors. I think David's does that intentionally. I never guarantee a color match just something close. Tell your customer up front and they won't expect perfection but sometimes they will get it.

One thing you need to keep in mind is that bright colors (neons) tend to glow more after they've set and dark, intense colors go darker. I guess the way to combat that is to mix them the day before you need them so you can adjust if necessary. Remember, we don't have the same dyeing capabilities that fabric manufacturers and paint manufactures have so a perfect match every time just isn't realistic.

You are right in that we are experts but we are experts at art and color matching is science not art. Don't beat yourself up about it, do your best and the customer will be fine.

Nice work on the damask cake. I love that pattern.

Love the idea! How do you all deal with a customer coming to you with a color sample and you try your level best to achieve that color, but in the end it does not really represent the color that well? I had a cake last weekend to do and when i did the color it came out pretty close. But by the time the color set it kind of went darker. How do I even control that? And ultimately how do you explain that to the customer when we are the "experts", we should know better?! Any…

On a side note - this is the first cake I did stenciling on...the damask. I thought it was pretty straight forward but have to get more practice on how thick the BC should be on.

You can use the Hobby Lobby-Micheals stencils. However, the one's I've purchased there are a thicker plastic and tend to stick to my buttercream. Maybe a different recipe will work better but I'm not willing to change my recipe.
