Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I am in the beginning stages of starting my cake business from home. My problem is if I was in my home town I would have more clients then I could handle, but I am in another state with no family, few friends, and I am a stay at home mom that does not get out enough to meet people.Does anyone share a similiar situation? and could share with me some ideas that I can do to generate business. Thanks!!

That is why I love the discussion boards, you find out the pros and cons to different things. Have you ever dealt with restaurants and made cakes for them? I would love to get some advice on that. Thanks for your comment.

Leah... watch the caterers and coordinators... I had a couple of them approach me about referrals...they wanted 10% for every referral! I had booked a wedding cake a year before a wedding a couple years ago. About 3 months before her wedding she decided to this coordinator...this was a coordinator that had talked to me about her idea of referrals... she had the nerve to tell me I owed her 10% of the cost of the cake.... I told her the cake was booked 9 months before she was and that would not happen. At the wedding she was really a PITA. Just be careful of that route.
I have not delt with resturants because I am sure you'd have to have a commercial kitchen to do that. Not positive but pretty sure. It might depend on where you live too! I love finding out things on here too! Great to hear what works for one might be a total bomb for another.
Leah I'm in the same situation as you.You could sale your cakes at the local farmers market if you have one.
I don't have one close by, but their is a festival that takes place onece a year, I was going to try and get a table and sale cake slices. I don't know if you read the whole discussion, but I did get some good suggestions that could possible work for you as well. Most of the things I have done were cake donations, so people can tast my cake and pass out samples. I think since we are not in our hometown it will take more then word of mouth, we will diffinitely have to market our cakes. Does the Farmers Market help you generate business? have you tried other things? Someone suggested talking with a salon owner and see if you can come on their busy day and sale cake slices or pass out samples. I am definitely going to try that. Thanks for your comment and keep me posted.

A friend of mind made cakes for a locally owned resturant and a coffee shop as well. She did it out of her own kitchen and like you said it depends on the state you are in. She did good until the owner did not honor his part of the contract. They both agreed that he would only sell cakes by the slice and if a customer wanted a whole cake he would refer them to her. She sold them to him as a discount rate, cause he was buying a lot. I think it could be a great way to generate business as long as you are not doing business with a crook. Thanks for your comment.

Go to www.vistaprint.com and make cheap business cards. You'll then be on the email list to get notices of all kinds of free products. I just got 25 professional pamphlets/pricing guides FREE in the mail - all I had to do was pay shipping. I also got a free car magnet to advertise as I drive down the road...
Jennifer that is a good deal, and what better way to advertise with car magnets. Thanks for sharing :)

I love vistaprint just got a shipment from them this week. I don't know if you do cookies, but I order the address labels from them that compliment my business cards and I put them on the back of each bagged cookie. that way when they're given out at the party or shower they have something with my name and contact info on them instead of trying to remember to ask the hostess or what not. I also get brochures from them that have pictures of some of my cakes on them and a little more info about what i offer than what my business card says. I attach a business card on the back and have those to give out too. they're websites are very reasonably priced as well. did i mention i love vistaprint??? LOL
Now I know where to get my labels, cause I too wanted to give those out for my cake slices. Thanks a bunch:)

Leah... if your state allows it... go for it but I agree...stay away from the crooks :-)

Never heard of vista print... will have to look at it. I make all my own labels for my vanilla, stickers for bags, and labels for my boxes... spend a lot of design time on them. hmmmm might be an alternative.
