Fondant and buttercream together - will this work??

Hello everyone!! Hope you are all well :-)

I am about to embark on my first barbie doll cake. I have decided to do it with ruffles in the front and a bit at the bottom, but with a smooth bit on the top. Princessy. Now I think it will be quicker and easier to do the ruffles with buttercream and the wilton petal tip, than making them out of fondant... But, the layer of dress that will go over the top has to be fondant. Will it destroy the buttercream ruffles or be okay? I was thinking of doing the ruffles and letting them set first in the fridge, so that they are hard, then draping the fondant layer over.

Will this work? Or should I do it all in fondant? Hopefully someone else has tried this before and can give me a heads up :-)

Penny - you can certainly do fondant and butter icing together, but I would be inclined not to lay fondant over a whole lot of ruffles.  They will spoil the look of your fondant, making it lumpy and the fondant would more than likely squish some of the butter icing down, so it seeps out of the bottom.  Why don't you only pipe ruffles where they are going to be seen and just do a butter icing crumb coat over the part where you want to lay your fondant? If you need to tidy the edges where the ruffles meet the fondant, then you could either pipe some tiny rosettes or put sugar pearls down the edge.  Does that make sense?  I know what I mean, but it's tricky to put into words!

Thanks! Yes I didn't explain myself properly, I'm planning to put ruffles only on the front, in a kind of triangle shape... Then drape the fondant over the rest of it, so that it looks like the ruffles are a second layer of the dress.... But only out the front and around the bottom as a "border" kind of like a revealed petticoat? So prettly much what your saying i think... But I was worried the ruffles on the edges which will be slightly covered, would be ruined. My it is really hard to explain haha!

I know - I have the same problem trying to put what I mean into words!  I get you now.  So this is how I would do it (pretty much as you have said, I think).  Crumb coat your whole skirt, let it set.  Mark out where you want your ruffles to be and pipe them, with a very slight flat overlap.  Let that set to a crust.  Put your fondant over, making sure your fondant is not too thick and heavy, so it doesn't put too much pressure on the little bit of buttercream that you are covering.  I think that's what you were planning on doing anyway yes?  Should be fine.

Indeed that was the plan... Thankyou so much! I saw another lady doing a tutorial on doing the ruffles with fondant, and It shook my idea a bit lol. But it would take alot longer that way so definately sticking to the plan... Wish me luck! My first doll cake! This forum has been amazing. About a year ago, I was a total amatuer, didn't even know what a crumb coat was, or that you could make buttercream go stiff haha. Now I'm an intermediate :-) (well, self professed intermediate lol)

Thanks Katy, and everyone else on here!

Welcome Penny.  I'm sure it will be a great success.  Don't forget to post your pictures when it's done, I would love to see the outcome.

Will do, should have it completed Saturday night :-)
Finished! Turned out just how I wanted :-D
