Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Going to have a play with some fondant tomorrow, bought some cutters that I want to try out. Being my first time, would it be better to buy storebought fondant or make my own  ? If making my own  does anyone have a simple, tasty recipe for me to try ?

I went to the supermarket the other day, and living in NZ there were 2 options of store bought fondant :)

for your first time I'd suggest store bought so you can get used to yhe proper "feel".  After that be sure to try to make your own.  Some use a marshmallow (MMF) recipe eith great success.  I use Michele Foster's recipe.  Both can be found in the recipe section of the forum.

I agree with others... wilton tastes nasty I started with it several years ago and when I found Satin Ice... fell in love with it!   Love the flavor the texture... everything.  I have tried Fondex elite and can not justify the price for the amount of fondant you get.  And have used fondex also... I just actually placed a small order from Cal Java for a couple 2 lb tubs that I need shipped to San Antonio for the wedding cake I am doing in a couple weeks.   They are having a good sale and it was cheaper for me to order through them this time.  I don't make my own because I don't have time to but I know a lot of people do

For my first time working with fondant I decided to make my own fondant (I have no idea why!) and I was very overwhelmed, I had melted marshmallows from the floor to ceiling in my kitchen, AND I had a broken right arm.... what was I thinking!??  Anyways, yes I would go with the store bought fondant, it's easier for your first time.  Now though I always make my own fondant and just can't go back to store bought, so please do try it some time!  Good luck :)

Too funny.  I've never had marshmallows on my floor but some of the powdered sugar always seems to up there.  Today as I was cleaning up the mess, I actually thought my husband has a point.  He thinks I'm crazy. actually do all my baking & decorating while he is at work.  He hates the mess even though he's not the one cleaning up.

When I was first learning cake decorating we had to make EVERYTHING from scratch. Now I just buy fondant. It's much simpler and the results are consistent everytime I use it. I live in Australia and all our celebration cakes have been traditionally covered with marzipan and fondant. I hate marzipan but have always loved fondant.
I don't know about the US versions of fondant but I have found Orchard brand fondant has both a great texture and taste, but recently I discovered Fondarific and was really impressed with the flavour and texture and it's fantastic to work with! 13 flavours to choose from too! 
I wasn't impressed with Satin Ice. I bought some late last year and 2 weeks later I went to use it and it smelled and tasted rancid! It's supposed to have a shelf life of 12mths! But I think you just need to find what works for you in the region you live in as humidity, temperature will play a part.  But have fun.
