These are just ideas off the top of my head:

To make round hay bales, you could take the freeze and then cut the tops off two cupcakes and put the bottoms together end to end with buttercream, then trim off the cake to make it the same diameter all the way down. Crumb coat, then you could use a grass tip to pipe the color you want so it looks "fuzzy" like a hay bale. Or you could cover it with fondant and then scratch it to make it look like hay.

If you want traditional hay stacks, you could turn a cupcake upside down and then use the grass tip, starting at the bottom and working your way up, dragging the tip down in long strands.

I hope that helps.
We made hay bales by toasting coconut then making the square bales out of fondant and putting a thin layer of buttercream over it and rolling the bales in the toasted coconut. worked great and was super easy.
I used my grass tip to make a hay bale. the one I made was 3 8x12 stacked so it was pretty big. It turned out great, after I iced I rolled some fondant in thin ropes and put them on the cake for the baling twine. It was all very easy
