Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi all:

In all of your professional opinions, what is the best type of frosting and technique(s) to use when drawing an image directly on a cake?

I know that all of the commercial bakeries use a "buttercream" frosting that usually includes no butter at all, and the decorators can easily draw nearly any image, from cartoon characters to (somewhat) realistic pictures, on a cake.

I always use IMBC and am confident with my drawing abilities; I'd to be able to offer my customers another option for designs on custom cakes in addition to creating flat and 3-D details with fondant and gumpaste, which is what I almost always do. So, I'd like to be able to draw images directly onto a cake, which is where all of your kindness, generosity and experience comes in : ) The "frozen buttercream transfer" technique seems a little time consuming and looks like there's always a chance that the image will break during the transfer. I'd like to do it directly-

Do you outline first? What tips do you use? Can I use my IMBC?

Any suggestions? Thank you all so much!
