Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I had an order for cupcakes for a little boy's birthday this past weekend.  The customer wanted 24 cupcakes (1 dozen yellow, 1 dozen chocolate).  I charged her $1.25 each or $15 per dozen.  I made all the batters from scratch as well as the buttercream icing (which is mostly butter).  My husband said he thought I charged too much.  She knew going in what the price would be.

24 cupcakes in my old supermarket job cost $17.99. They weren't scratch and it was all prefrozen. DEFINATELY NOT over priced.
Thank you very much, ladies, I didn't think so either but my husband had me second guessing myself. (I know I should never listen to him. LOL!)
Actually, I've been reading lately that cupcakes are going at a per serving price - $2.50 and up. Some as high as $7 each!
Noooo! Making cup cakes, cakes and decorated them is a reall art craft which needs patience, time, and creativity, you're not charging too much you're just pricing you're time, effort, ingredients and creativity.
There is a CupCake store in Las Vegas, actually in the Monte Carlo. You want to talk about expensive! They aren't even really decorated either - just different cupcakes with frosting and color. I didn't buy one! You did just fine in pricing as long as you made a profit for the time and expense of what you did. If you find that you broke out even, perhaps you should recalculate to make more of a profit. Good luck!
Kathy, a friend of mine quoted me $3 per cupcake and $4 if it was in an individual box (for a communion)
here in NY a cupcake at CRUMBS costs $3.50 or more!!
Wow, that better be one YUMMY cupcake! And, the $7.00 cupcake in Vegas must be sprinkled with gold dust! I thank you all for your input on this.
I charge $20 and up per dozen and I know of people who charge more than that with 2.50 to 3.00 per cupcake. $30 for two dozen is not too much!
take your rolling pin....and conk your husband over the head with it please....for me! And you can tell him I told you to do that...my husband agrees with me. My husband (Superman as he is known to mere mortals) said that when you are in there baking 50 million of those cupcakes because you undercharged for them and everyone and their dog wants to buy from you because you were so cheap...said that your husband will miss you and wish that you had charged five times that so that he could sit next to you at dinner and see your beautiful face. Not a direct quote but close enough! Undercharge and you will be over busy...overcharge and you will still be busy but not overworked
Rolling pin in hand, waiting for husband to walk through the door! Thank you so much for the advise and the laugh. I will be raising my rates with my next order. Thank Superman for me, too. :D

This is my reply when people balk at a price per serving. "Think of it this way, if you go out to eat and order dessert, how much would that dessert cost? Since most restaurants charge at least $5 for a small dessert, I'd say $1.25 for a cupcake is a deal!"

You could also play the "the price doesn't cover just flour and sugar, it covers the cost to run my oven, the cupcake liners, the water and soap to clean up, labor, electricity, the gas to drive to the store and back, the car payment for the car to drive in, and, of course, my talent!" card.

(that above list could go on and on and on and on and on. . . . . )
I used to work harder not smarter... now I work smarter not harder... Charge what you are worth girl... don't short change yourself! :-)
