Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi all! I recently aquired a wonderful collection of cutters and icing nozzels amongsts other things. They belonged to an old lady who sadly passed away. She was a wonderul cake decorator for over 35 years. I have about 200 different nozzels and about 400 different steel cutters. Due to the fact that some of these date back to the 60's/70's, some are showing some rust. what is the best way for me to clean these? the cutters are fine but some of the nozzels need some attention.

 

I put them all in a pot on the stove with a little bicarb to properly clean them and used an old tooth brush to brush the rusted bits. Most came beutifully clean but some are still showing a few bad spots. How do i clean these nicely?

Hey Vicky

I am assuming you are taking about piping tips when you say "nozzels"??  Try a mixture of lemon juice and cream of tartar. Best to buy a small tip brush especially for this. You might have to let it sit for a minute or so. Not too long tho, as lemon is acidic. Rinse well with warm water.  Hope this helps.   :0)

For your cutters, give obvious rust spots a good rub with fine-grit sand paper, wash in a dilute solution of vinegar, rinse off, dry very well and then lightly coat with mineral oil [won't go rancid] ..

 

Store in container with a couple of those silica packets that are found in prescription medicene to absorb moisture ...
