Any ideas as to what to take to a church picnic? I am thinking about cupcakes, but I am not sure, maybe petit fours?

Cupcakes are always popular Jackie, but may be too much if someone else is also taking cake. Petit fours are a nice idea - just a mouthful of sweetness and you can make so many more. Or what about cake fingers? Make a slab cake, cut it into fingers and either cover with pouring fondant or pipe with buttercream. Of course, you could also make the 1" cupcakes (really tiny ones in petit four cases) - I have found these to be extremely popular at parties.
Had not even thought of the mini cupcakes, so much easier at an outdoor picnic. I have never even heard of cake fingers. I may try that just because I have the time.
Hi Jackie - got your message, so this is a response to that too. (You're welcome by the way!). Here is a link to one of my photos. They are cake fingers I made as a gift for lemon cake lover at Christmas - so very simple and quick. You simply bake a traybake or a square or oblong, whatever tin you have, of the type of cake you want. Mark it out into even slices and cut. What I did with these was simply to star pipe some lemon butter icing onto them and added some fondant accents.

Come to that, you could make a traybake, ice it as it is, still in the tin, mark it out into squares and take the whole thing to the picnic and just cut pieces out as required. This is a very popular thing for summer fetes.
I have also made party squares using the same principle of baking, but in a deeper tin, and then cut into squares and dip in pouring fondant. When the fondant is set, pipe some decoration on with royal icing or butter icing. This is more time consuming and a bit messy lol! Here's the link to the ones I made -

Hope this is of some help. Feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Never heard of cake fingers! Will have to check those out! I made a dessert for our family reunion that I got from Pinterest last week and it was yummy. Here is the link:

It was yummy... super easy too. I did add a layer of coconut on top of the cream cheese layer though.
Man, that looks good Jeri! Cake fingers are just my name for them - others might call them cake slices probably, like Mr. Kipling for example. Assuming you know who Mr. Kipling is lol!

Katy.... it was a total hit! I had everyone to my home after our reunion and was serving dessert. Had several to choose from and this one was devoured! So easy to make too!
