Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi fellow decorators!

I've been asked to do a full slab cake for a Christening of a baby boy. It will be buttercream, not Fondant. However, they do not want a cross on the cake, as it represents death in their culture. My question is, what else can I do to design an entire slab cake to represent the Christening?

My thoughts were to do it in white buttercream, with blue accents and borders, with a few baby themed items on it. Like blocks, bears, ducks, etc..and write "God bless.." on it. But isn't that more of a baby shower theme?

I'd love to hear your ideas and suggestions!

Thanks in advance :)

Its kind of hard without a cross, but i found a couple of cute ideas, but i agree that without the cross it will tend to look like a shower cake. I also saw a cake that looks like an open book, on the left it has the birth announcement info. Example: On the  day of December 12th, 2010, we have been blessed with the birth of Boy Doe. The parents, Mary & John Doe, are proud that the lord has given them the blessnig of this beautiful child. Please share in this moment of thanks ...etc... and on the right hand side it has a pair of baby shoes made of fondant with a plaque with the baby name.

Thank you for your help! I really like the last link. I will put some ideas together and see what I come up with.

When I run low on ideas I always google LOL, but I'm sure what ever you do will be beautiful! Best of luck!

I just made a christening cake for a baby boy this past week.  I made a christening outfit, complete with pants and a vest, a little bow tie at his collar. decorated it in buttercream, with a scroll pattern on the vest, and the pants and the shirt were smooth frosting.  The only fondant I used was for the bow-tie.    I have also done the cross and the book .  Good Luck.

A white dove would be beautiful.

In my area the only ones who do the whole cross thing are the Catholic parents. Most Christening cakes I have seen and done have just had a baby theme - you  know building blocks, baby outfits, sleeping babies, booties, baby animals, baby asleep in a flower; no religious images whatsoever. Linda Pawsey has a beautiful book dedicated to Christening cakes (Christening Cakes 2002 Merehurst-Murdoch Press).
