Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Was wondering should i charge family? Of course I do cakes free for my children and husband lol, but for aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, best friends, etc should i charge what I charge others?

Cause if I do them as a gift I get asked ALOT.....and it is hard to say no. But then I feel bad to charge them cause what if they can't afford it??? I charge 3.50 a serving and I only do fondant cakes!

So what do you do?

Thanks!

I used to do them as gifts and then like you got asked to do so many so then I started chg for ingredients and now i just charge....everyone.
I was told years ago when I first began decorating to either charge the full amount or do the cake for free.  And, that is what I found best to do.  Less head aches.  Psycologically, the thought may be that the price charged "is the price the cake is worth".  I would have to say that it is your choice whether to charge family and friends.  In doing business, I have a policy that friendship and business is separate.  If someone would help me with my business, I tell them right at the beginning that friendship and business is separate, so payment is the policy.  I think the same should go for cakes for friends, too.  If you were my friend, and I wanted a cake, I definitely would expect to pay you full price.  I would question the friendship if a friend expected the cake free and got annoyed if I charged.  There should be respect when one is in business.  If you offer to make a cake for a friend's birthday, then, that is perfectly okay.  However, if a friend wants a cake for an occasion or a gift for someone, payment should be the protocol.  I was at work years ago and someone told me that they were giving a guy a baby shower at work because his wife was having a baby and I was to do the cake.  I gave them my price list.  Boy, was I talked about!  Tough!  If I wanted to do the cake for free, it should be my choice.  Another lady at work told me about the complain and informed me that she wanted a cake for a work occasion and I was to get paid.  She wanted that to be clear.  That is the right way.
I have decided to only charge for ingredients......i am trying to open my own cookie business but have not made it legal yet. so i am only doing cookies for family and friends. i do not want to get in trouble. i have too much to lose. i do work in a bakery so i could work out of their kitchen if i really needed too, but i really don't want to. so for now i am not charging a whole lot. just doing it cause i enjoy it. :)
