Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Just decided to cancel my order.  I am working on learning more about gumpaste flowers so I am going to use the $$$ that I would have spent on the Cricut machine and put it towards DVD's and new cutters.  I will actaully save money this way and it will challenge me more than the machine.   To all who have ordered... have fun with it.   I have the expression and love it but will stick to paper crafting with it.

Jeri....can't you make the fancy cupcake holders/sleeves (sorry I can't remember what they are called-lol) with the 'paper crafting'? I've wanted one for sooooo long & this is one of this reasons.

Sorry you cancelled your order, I read what you wrote in the other post. I do hope that they fix all the confusion.
Yes you can make the cupcake holders as long as you have a template. I think there is one on the Sweet Temptations cartridge but it is always $69.99 and have not had a reason to invest in it yet. I have several cartridges and as soon as I find that one on sale I am going to buy it too. I love my Expression and use it all the time but just decided that I will spend my $$$ on other things for now.
I would love to buy the cricut for cakes but I am like you as far as the challenging part. I am the type that loves to create things from scratch. All of my cakes are made from scratch and I actually enjoy sitting and making the decorations and flowers by hand. And the reaction that I get from my customers make it all worth it.

where did you find the dvd's for the flowers at?
There are a lot of vendors that sell the DVD's. I like Global Sugar Arts but you can order Nicholas Lodges from his site too. Also... Edna has some good ones too. I need to figure out which flowers I really want to learn and get the DVD's ordered
i feel the same as you , cake decorating is all about trying out different techniques which i enjoy as i like a challenge I dont want to have to depend on a machine to do it for me xxx
Some good books for gumpaste flowers are Sugar Roses For Cakes and Sugar Orchids for Cakes, both by Alan Dunn/Tombi Peck and someone else I can't remember, sorry. The instructions and photos are really well-done.
Jeri,

I'm with you on this one..since I also have the expression, I thought about buying the Cricut for cakes as well ...but for me, I felt the money spent on Nicholas Lodges DVD's would serve me better. As a matter of fact . currently I'm excitedly awaiting my order of 5 Nicholas Lodge DVD's and a couple of cutter that I just ordered last Thursday...the waiting is unbearable.lol

As far as the cupcake wrappers go..I couldn't justify the Circut price since there was nothing else I wanted on the cartridge. However, I did find a free template on line for the wrapper and used that to make mine..seriously, 100 wrappers only took me about 2 hours to trace, cut out, stamp and glue..so I didn't think that to bad..did on two lunch hours :)

Deb
I never use the cupcake wrappers because most people do not want to pay you the extra to make them so I don't mess with them. I need to get my DVD's ordered so I can do some playing! Which DVD's did you get?
Gumpaste Filler Flowers
My thinking on the wrappers..is. since there are so many designs in stock paper to choose from..I figure I can offer the wrapper at a major dicount and they are just as cute as the pricey ones. I do like the way they make the cupcakes look nice and finished though.
DVD's ..... :) :) on the way:
Gumpaste Gardenia & Peony
Bearded Iris & Southern Magnolia
Gumpaste Hydrangea & Sunflower
Mini cakes lol.

I have self taught myself a few of these flowers already..but looking at all the details of what is included in these DVD's by Nicholas I couldn't pass them up..besides, I never mind trying a different way to create a flower..since so many flowers come in so many forms..I figure I can't go wrong..talk about hours of entertainment..lol
I placed an order tonight too.... I ordered Nick Lodges Gumpaste Filler Flowers and Jill Mayham's Sugar flowers. I already have a lot of JEM cutters so thought I'd order Jill's book that goes with them. And I ordered a bunch of dusts... I have a lot already but I have a cake coming up that is in jewel tone flowers so I needed more shades to do them. And a few more cutters to add to the collection I already have.
I'm too cheap to buy a cricut ....there are other machines that do the same thing (I hear) and you don't have to buy 70.00 cartridges every time you want a new design. I might...some day...get one. I never bought the edible image printer either...just seems like cheating to me. If I need bottle lables printed I can have them done at the local supply shop...so why buy a printer that I will use twice a year. My only interest in the Cricut would be for monograms...is it really worth that much money to make a handful of monograms each year....NOT according to my wallet! :)
