I have been seeing more and more of those cakes with stars and hearts seemingly "popping" out of them on what looks like wires.
Please excuse me if this question has been asked before, but what is the MOST foodsafe and attractive way to do this technique?
I have heard of several options, like using floral wire, straws, etc but I want to know what the general concensus is because I'd really like to try it out! :)
Thanks!

Wilton has floral tape/wire that is food safe. I went to my local cake supply place and asked them if they had the floral wire because it's expensive if you buy the wire from wiltons. they said just use regular floral wire that's what they did in the past. you might be able to call a floral shop and ask them as many cake decorators use florists when they need real flowers on the cake. they might be able to tell you what you can need. just a thought
I do not put wires directly into my cakes. I place them in a drinking straw and then place it in the cake. If needed, I use icing or melted chocolate to keep the wires from moving around.
Denise, I think the general consensus of bakers is that you do not put wires or tape directly into a cake. There are things in both that can cause issues (lead, latex etc). The best option seems to be either flower picks or straws.
Yes Denise
Straws are the way to go. I did a cake & had to push in real roses. I wrapped the stem of the flower with floral tape, for strength, but placed them in straws to put into the cake. As Goreti mentioned, a little bit of icing in the straw, I use royal, and it will dry hard. Then your wire won't move anywhere. I actually do believe it is a food safe law here for decorators not to put wires into a cake. I remember discussing this at my cake club meeting. :o)
Thanks for this idea. Now I know what to do with the butterfly I'm going to make soon.

Thank you, ladies, I appreciate the feedback!
