Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi everyone-

I'm in NJ and looking to find jeweled/mesh trim for borders on an engagement cake, as well as single rhinestones to add to the quilted areas. I've attached a photo for what I'm looking for.

Does anyone have suggestions for where I can find them?

Any advice for using them?

This is a first request for this type of decor, and the bride-to-be is very specific about wanting to add this "bling" to the cake.

The event is in mid-March, so I have time to order, if needed.

Thanks in advance for all of your help!

The bling ribbon doesn't really have any rhinestones.  It's a molded plastic with a silver coating.  It is beautiful and it looks like stones. Here is an example on one of my cakes: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sewsweet2/8324243356/in/set-7215763240...

Hi Paige - I'm in the UK, so I'm only suggesting what I know we can get here, but imagine you would be able to find the same thing in a cake supply store in your area or online.

I have a local store called Sugar Shack and they sell edible gems on sheets, made by Culpitt), that you could use for the studding on the quilting (you won't want to put something inedible on that).  These are the things I am talking about -

Thanks for all of your input, everyone!

But, how does this plastic/mesh/ribbon stay on the cake?

Even if you just wrap it around the bottom, how do you secure it so it stays in place?

Check out Micheal Crafts and ACmoore I saw them there

Oh thanks! I was trying online to see if those stores carry it; none of their sites seem to have a 'product search' (??) I want to make sure that I can find it, AND how much I will have to pay for it; so I can give a price to the customer.

But I still don't know; how it is secured to a cake?

Paige, I guess you secure it the same as you would any ribbon.  Personally I either dampen the fondant, wrap the ribbon round tight and secure the overlap at the back with a little royal icing.  If I'm going to be there to cut the cake, I will put a small round headed pin at the back pushed through the ribbon and into the cake.  But this might be dodgy if you are not there in case the pin gets into someones portion!

Once again, thank you all for so much help; this is such a terrific community here :)

I hope I can return the kindness soon-

I have read about using non-toxic glue to adhere the mesh to a strip of waxed paper, then attaching to the cake- perhaps with piping gel-

Then, I may just break down and find pretty (cheap!) rhinestone pins, sterilize them, and use them in the back of each tier that has the mesh on it.

Thanks all- any more suggestions are always appreciated

Thanks everyone! Here's the finished product: I found the "Diamond Wrap" at a local craft store (AC Moore, I think) ; secured with corsage pins (inserted through coffee stirrers for sanitation). I ordered edible rhinestones from DiamondPartyConfetti.com - very reasonable, good delivery and they were beautiful (as long as you don't refrigerate them). Handmade peonies were my 1st attempt; they're acceptable, but will do differently next time. The photo doesn't capture the color well at all- it was really a terrific, vibrant purple; not blue-ish as the photo shows. Thanks again :)

Wow Paige - this really pops!  Gorgeous, well done.
