I have only made a butter cake once and it didn't turn out well...very mushy.  So, I am sorry I don't have an answer for you.  I am very anxious to hear your answers.

HHave you tried Bake Space's White on White buttermilk cake recipe?  It has had very good reviews and has great flavor.  The chocolate recipe I love and have used for quite some time is by Daisy sour cream.  It's a moist and dense chocloate cake- really good.  I have doubled the recipe with success as well.  I have struggled for some time to find  good yellow cake recipe.  Cooks Illustrated has a very good yellow cake recipe as well.  Their recipes seem reliable, as well as the Joy of baking website.
