Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi everyone,

My cake business (from home) has really taken off and it's knocked me sideways :) I'm loving it though.
I'm still learning each day and I've just had a custome ask for a three tier wedding cake for 21st June this year. Not an unusual request - but they have decided they want each tier butterfly shaped! I've googled to see if anyone has done this before and I can't find any. If there a good reason for this?? will you lose the effect once it's all stacked? I'm having difficulty with this one, as originally it was going to be round with some of my handpainted butterflies adorning it.
Can someone guide me, as I think this could be cake disaster if I go ahead and stack it.
Many thanks,
Waiting for your sound advice & experience on this one.
Hugs,
Tracy x

Hi Tracy, I did a three tier wedding cake some two weeks ago with butterfly theme and instead of mounting cakes on top of each other, they were stacked on mirrors at different heights and different angles.  I will attempt to send you a picture (not always successful with all things techno).  Instead of cutting the cakes in shape of butterflies I made butterfly wings out of sugarpaste (some days in advance) and when firm I propped them up on the cakes at angles with the body inbetween - propped up on kebab sticks that I wiped with vinegar and then painted with white food colouring and used when good a dry - hope that helps :-)

Here comes the cake - hope it makes sense

Awesome Mandy!  Tracy, I'm with you, I think stacking butterfly shapes will lose the effect.  Could you perhaps still do them butterfly shaped, but use Mandy's idea of putting them on different stands?

Tracy, in my humble opinion, I think stacking them will look dumb. I like Mandy's idea of them being separate, or if you stack them, adding butterflies to the side as you have done on other cakes. Your trademark has been butterflies, and in all honesty, if there was a way to steer the customer into you making what you do best, and that is your butterflies, I would go that route if you can. I'm just saying.........

I have to say as well that I like Mandy's idea. Here is a cake we made using butterflies that I thought I would just share with you.

By the way Tracy have you ever considered doing a tutorial on how to make your butterflies? They are lovely.

Thanks so much for all your replies ladies. Had a problem adding a response earlier as I'm accessing from my iPhone.
I agree stacking butterfly shaped cakes will look wrong - I just needed to hear it from you guys & not just my own opinion. I find myself changing customers minds on things that I feel wouldn't be great (like black thick butter icing on cupcakes) and then feel sorry for them that their imagined confection hasn't been realised. Wondered if I was doing the same here......so pleased I'm not being a spoilsport. Thanks Linda & Stephanie for your compliments on my butterflies, if I can get myself together I might do a step by step on them, I've got another 3 orders with butterflies so I'm sure it's possible :)
I love both Mandy & Stephanie's cakes and hope I can steer my client into making the right choice and not offending them.
Watch this space.
Thanks again, hugs

Stephanie - did you make the butterflies on your cake? They are beautiful
Ok, quick update. I gave my client various options and put my point of view across to him & he's gone for a three tier stack of heart shaped cakes with a spiral of butterflies. Its to be a surprise for his bride 2B, so I'm pleased that is what he's chosen.
Many thanks for all your feedback,
