Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I made my first chocolate cake from scratch!! My girlfriend who only bakes from scratch said it was so good. My dilemma is I don't think so - I think box cakes taste better.  Is scratch cakes an acquired taste? I used the recipe out of my BC cookbook. Any help is greatly appreciated. Debbie :)

I feel the same way! I just like box cakes better, but I think it might be what you are raised with also. My mom always made box cakes so I guess maybe Im just use to that. I have tried baking from scratch and others think it tastes good but I just dont think its as good as out of the box!

Thanks for the help Stacy and Paul. I was raised on box cakes but, I really want to get into baking and decorating them. My friend says if someone is going to pay for a cake then they want a scratch cake.  I felt like it was a little dry and alot heavier - if that makes sense LOL. I want the person receiving the cake to enjoy it. If someone orders a cake do you give them the option for a scratch cake or a box cake? TIA Debbie :)

I use box cakes! I prefer them over the scratch cake.  I recently was making a cake and one of my cakes broke and it was late at night couldn't run to the store so had to make a cake from scratch.  It was much heavier and the color was much differnt than the box cake. I have always used the box cake.  I have also worked in a bakery and they used a "box" cake, the pilsbury cake mix came in 25 pound bags. It comes down to preference.  I don't think though that i would offer an option to the customer. Hope this helps!
WEll i have to agree with everyone here, it is up to preferrace, but for my last 3 cakes i have made , i have made them from scratch as i was told as well if i want to become a professional someday i have to learn to make them from sratch, but i just finsihed makeing my rich chocolate cake from scratch following wiltons ingredience and insturcutions, and well the cake it self did taste good nice and sweet , fluffy , but  a little on the dry side, but boyy did it Rise, i had a HUGe Mount to cut off the cake,which didnt leave much for decorating the cake,  that annouyed me , before last night , i had made 2 yellow cakes from scratch & they both seemd to be more i geuss you could say compacked, heavyier, not as tasty kinda like bread i geuss, i didnt like it ,  but i think that professsional cake decorators make cakes from scratch so i have to learn one way or another LOL , But thats my opinion, will be posting my first yellow cake on my blog here soon ,
