My niece has asked me to make a birthday cake for her daughter next month. She expects approx 45-50. Can anyone give me an idea as to how much cake I will need? Thanks.

Goreti, if you are using a cake mix, you should be able to use no more than 3 mixes, depending on how big you choose to serve the pieces. You figure that each cake mix serves large slices for 12 people or 24 cupcakes. So, depending on how large the slices will be will determine how much cake you make. Most scratch cakes are about the same size as a cake mix, unless they specifically say they will fill three pans. Does this help any at all?
I was thinking a 10 in round & 8 in but then I'm doubting if that is enough. Keep in mind I always end up baking & cooking a lot more than I need cause I am always afraid of not having enough. My kids say I only know how to cook for an army. I guess that is what happens when you come from a large family. I have had to buy smaller pots & pans since now I pretty much just cook for hubby & I.
I know what you mean. I tend to over cook my meals too, and it is just down to my husband and me too. Do you think all 50 people will show up? I just made a sheet cake that would feed 90 people and there was half a cake left! Ninety people were expected and there were a lot of people there, but not the 90, plus I was surprised at how many people just don't eat cake. I would think that what you have planned would be plenty.
