Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I recently got asked to do cupcakes for a baby shower.  The girl that is having the baby is not very girly at all.  So basically pink, flowers, and babies under blankets are out of the question.  She wants something chic.  Possible pastel jungle theme is the only thing I have to go by.  Does anyone else have anything outside the box from the norm?  The sex of the baby is unknown and remember, these are cupcakes (I figured this would get more attention here then the actual cupcake section.  Also cupcakes are cake too! lol)  I asked for the theme of the nursery but that is unknown as well.  HELP!!  Any ideas?

I would ask whoever is throwing the shower if I could have one of the invitations and go off of that.  Odds are they will be decorating around that theme.
I love Eileen's suggestion of using the invitation for inspiration. Also think about things like G/P stars, moons, animals, etc. on short wires to give height. Top with umbrellas, pacifiers, baby bottles, baby shampoo, etc. - all made of G/P or fondant.

I kid you not....I recently did a double baby shower cake of.........baby skulls...seems this is a popular theme amongst the youn'ins, these days....I didn't get it...but gave them what they asked for...I used this as inspiration (but I did mine in blue for boys):

You could always do baby barn animals out of fondant!
You could check to see if they've picked out any decor for the baby yet.  I recently used pictures from the crib set to decorate the sides of a baby shower cake for my nephew (it was a transportation theme so I used the car, plane, truck, etc.) and then add cute animals as well.
For baby shower cakes you can think what it should be but also you ca put cartoon characters design to it.
these are good pics and would work best on cupcakes once you turn them into cupcake edible photos

I recently did a cake around what the parents liked. They knew the sex but had not decided on a theme for the nursery and did not want the traditional "baby showers" things. Dan and mom both liked sports and mom loved eeyore so I combined the two. Maybe find out what mom and dad are into?
stars and moons would be cute. maybe a nursery rhyme theme? there are heaps to choose from and they don't have to be particularly girly. I made baby shower cupcakes with little footprints on them, these can be done in any colour and are not too girly also. If you don't know the sex you can do them in different pastels. Depends how simple or detailed you want to go.
Yes a bit disturbing and dark to me too. What happened to precious bundles of love? lol

This is one I did for a boy baby shower.  Its a little more indie but robots are popular right now.

what if you do solar system type stuff.  Make the icing look like clouds and have glittery moons, stars, suns etc. Or do nursery rhyme things like the cow jumped over the moon, and twinkle twinkle little star?  Just some thoughts :)
