Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hello I am new to this forum but am hoping for some help!  I am making a christening cake and want to put little baby blocks on it spelling out the baby's name.  How are they made please so that they are all the same size, shape etc.  I can't imagine making them by hand as they would be all irregular.  I can't seem to find any help on the web for this. Any ideas for me please.

Thanks a lot

Gwen

I believe they are all cut by hand from square or rectangular cakes.  Measuring is the trick.

Thanks for that Deah, so they are cut from cake and then sugarpasted?  They are very small to put sugarpaste on aren't they, must be so fiddly!
yes, that's the way.  You can make them whatever size you need.  If you don't want to work with the small blocks make them larger.

Above is the link for a first birthday cake I did with blocks.  The picture is a full one not just the blocks but you can see them.  I made mine out of foam and covered with fondant.  I measured and marked them with marker so i had a perfect line to follow. I used a very sharp knife and had perfect corners.  Of course they were not meant to eat but it worked. Hope this helps!

About what size are you hoping for them to be?  1" square? 3" square? bigger? smaller?  I did a cake that was all baby blocks and they were about 5" square and made out of cake covered with fondant.  But for something 2" or smaller I would just make them out of fondant.  To get them all the same size you could roll the fondant really thick and then use a square cutter to go down through it.
Hi Paul, thanks very much for your explanation, I looked at your picture to see what you mean, they look great. I only have one question, what is RKT?  Thanks Gwen
Thanks Elaine very much, foam is another idea but I don't trust the accuracy of my measuring and cutting so they are all uniform but maybe I just need to practise practise practise! I can't seem to open the picture of your cake though
Thanks very much Eileen, I was wondering about just making them from fondant, I want to make small ones, about 1" x 1" to just put on the board around the cake. I need to practise!  Thanks so much everyone for your help it is much appreciated!

I made mine from fondant. Roll a long sausage then use two cake smoothers to make it square. Cut the blocks our and use the smoothers to make square again, then let dry. My blocks were only 1".

I found this great tutorial and this is how I made mine.

Thank you so much Bettina, that's so helpful, I think that is the way I will do them, thanks for the links to the tutorials too.  I want mine only 1" also.  Thank you!
